Description

For decades, the Nicaraguan premium rum producer has been committed to creating a more sustainable production line: distilling its rum using 100% renewable energy and capturing all CO2 emissions during fermentation. But Flor de Caña’s commitment to being green goes much further than its distillery. Still this is one of the issues rum has created for itself in many ways. It simply cannot be trusted! Flor de Caña has received more than 200 international accolades, making it one of the most awarded rums worldwide. One of the highest distinctions received by the brand was being named ‘Global Rum Producer of the Year’ by the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 2017. Supporting diverse community projects and NGOs focused on improving the lives of the most vulnerable populations in the country.

He initially invested in a shorter and safer steamboat route through Nicaragua to transport passengers and goods from the US East Coast to the West Coast during the height of the California Gold Rush. The route was a huge success, but when news broke about the construction of the Panama Canal and the US coast-to-coast railway, Canessa knew it was time to set out on a new adventure. In the bottle the rum is lovely rich brown with red flashes, in the glass slightly lighter with a gold hint to it. In terms of an aged rum it certainly looks the part.Flor de Caña’s rums are naturally aged for up to 30 years inside premium bourbon barrels and without any sugar or artificial ingredients. Each statement is gluten-free, kosher-certified, exceptionally smooth, and loaded with flavour. Flor de Caña is a naturally aged rum enriched by the unique properties of the San Cristobal volcano, the most active in Nicaragua. The fertility of its soil, the enriched volcanic water and the hot volcanic climate to which the barrels are exposed during the aging process contribute in creating a singularly smooth and deliciously balanced rum. Flor de Caña’s historic commitment to sustainable practices and its century‐old rum‐making tradition, perfected throughout 130 years and five family generations, have earned the brand more than 200 international accolades, making it one of the most awarded rums in the world. This story began in 1875 when Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, a young adventurer from Genoa, Italy, risked everything by leaving behind his family and the comforts of the old continent to travel to the exotic and tropical country of Nicaragua.

I ask Glaser why they can't do this in Nicaragua and why ISA has been so against improving conditions. Carruthers, Nicola (3 May 2018). "Flor de Caña gains Fairtrade certification". The Spirits Business . Retrieved 4 July 2018. The 7 Gran Reserva comes in a lovely upright almost square bottle. The new label looks more sleek and modern than its predecessor and indeed the age statement has been removed. This is now simply 7 Gran Reserva. So the 7 could stand for absolutely anything at all. This could mean a downgrade in the liquid inside but at the same time it also gives the blender more room for manoeuvre to produce consistent batches of the same rum over time. He is not tied to certain ages of rum etc.Today you’ll find locally produced bottles everywhere from the Caribbean to the Congo; Honduras to Hawaii. You’d be searching for quite some time, however, before you found one with the pedigree of Flor de Caña. The 125-year-old Nicaraguan brand has carried its craft across five generations of family stewardship, amassing countless accolades along the way. Most recently, it was named 2017 Best Rum Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.

Today, Flor de Caña is the only spirit to hold the two top sustainability credentials in the world: carbon‐neutral certification and Fair Trade status. It's rest, water, and shade," Trabanino says. "Those are the recommendations we make for all of our kidney patients. You have to rest under shade for at least ten or 15 minutes out of each hour. And then you have to drink enough water. The problem is that every year it's getting hotter and hotter, and so there are days when even drinking water is not enough." The natural beauty of Nicaragua — pristine lakes and waterfalls, fertile jungle, bountiful sugarcane — convinced him to make rum his business. So in 1890 he established a distillery at the base of San Cristóbal, the tallest and most active volcano in Nicaragua. This fateful decision led to the birth of Flor de Caña, and a liquid legacy guarded today by his great-great-grandchildren. I enjoy how the different ranges have very different flavor profiles,” Micah Melton, beverage director at The Aviary in Chicago and New York, says. “From crisp and dry, to rich and toffee — you can really play up the nuance between the 4 year and the 25, and everything in between.” In terms of taking care of the environment, Flor de Caña has been distilling its rum with 100% renewable energy for more than a decade. The brand has also planted 50,000 trees annually since 2005 and captures and recycles all CO2 emissions during the fermentation process. Flor De Cana Named number 1 Rum Producer in the World". Flor de Caña is one of the early trailblazers in this space,” Paul Rice, president and CEO of Fair Trade USA, says. “They are one of just a few spirits companies to adopt Fair Trade practices in their supply chain.” I like the way the rum stands up to the cola. Whilst it also takes a slight edge of the bubbliness of the cola and smooths the drink out slightly. The strong rum taste remains mixed with that slightly boozy feel to it. With Flor De Cana 7 you feel you are drinking a “stiff drink” but also one that is refined, well aged and nicely blended. Rum Journal: Reaching Cloud Nine With Nicaragua's Flor de Caña". Caribbean Journal. 3 January 2013. For its part, ISA claims that it maintains 'rigorous supervision to ensure that contractors comply with the laws of the country and all the hygiene and occupational safety rules that are applied in the company.' With the holidays upon us, Flor de Caña’s flagship 12-Year is the perfect gift for rum-lovers and spirit enthusiasts alike. Reddish amber in colour, it delivers rich aromas of red fruit, honey, and toasted nuts. Take a sip and relish the overlapping waves of vanilla, oak, and baked apples, which trail out on a smooth and well-balanced finish.

Sacasa points out that there is a mobile clinic equipped with a cooling area that takes blood and urine samples, and offers hydrating beverages and food. He also claims that workers are paid for the seventh day of rest. I ask La Isla's field researcher, Rhonda, for her take. "I've been to a variety of fields, some under supervision of Nicaragua Sugar Estates Limited and a couple more where I came uninvited and unexpected," she says. "On the tour, they made an attempt at shade, water, rest. On the fields where I showed up without notice, there was no trace of water or shade to be found, and there certainly were not workers resting at any point." The nose is similar to the 12 Centenario. It smells slightly younger with more sweet alcohol notes on the nose. It smells reasonably “boozy”. Despite this you still get notes of good oak ageing. Nice charred oak and a little bit of toffee. It has a quite distinctive almost warming note to it similar to the 12. There is something very pleasant on the nose which I can’t quite place. Overall the nose is good and despite being slightly strong in terms of alcohol still pretty decent. There is a saying that captures Flor de Caña’s vision regarding sustainability: the Earth is not an inheritance from our parents, but a loan from our children. That’s why we strive to be a brand with purpose, a brand that not only produces an award-winning sustainable rum, but that is also focused on leaving a better future for generations to come.
