Privately he continued to paint, mainly with oils, and to study the works of the great masters, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso in particular. The Art of Fine Gifts: Twentieth-century painter, designer and wood engraver Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) was responsible for a fascinating range of different works, from illustrations for books to designs for ceramics for the established Wedgwood pottery firm.

His original watercolours of the chalk figures on the Downs are now considered amongst his finest work.
