Art Sex Music by Cosey Fanni Tutti | Waterstones

From the acclaimed author of Art Sex Music comes a vital meditation on womanhood, creativity and self-expression, and a revelatory exploration into the lives of three visionary artists. Cosey is an artist, a partner, a mother and every section of her life is described in unflinching detail making Art Sex Music an enjoyable, uplifting, sometimes unbearably raw read. Around the same time as Tutti was listening to hours of antique tape loops found by Derbyshire’s partner in the wake of her death in 2001, Tutti’s own Art Sex Music was itself being made into a film with her cooperation, opening up questions of representation, truth and understanding of another’s internal life.

Margery Kempe’s greatest achievement is, perhaps, not telling of her saintly pilgrim’s progresses but in having remained alive as long as she did, surviving attacks and flouting religious authority by being better versed in the scriptures than the big-hatted misogynists she came up against. It is not uncommon in this book to read phrases like “I think she must have felt…” where Tutti’s commitment to a shared female perspective comes to the fore. Her patience must have been sorely tested at times, and I’d hazard a guess that her changes in mood and sudden outbursts could also have been a way of releasing the frustration she felt. Cosey Fanni Tutti is on the cover of this month's Electronic Sound with a very special Cosey seven-inch to accompany the magazine.

Art Sex Music (Faber Greatest Hits) by Cosey Fanni Tutti | Faber

In what little spare time she had, Tutti (who now lives in East Anglia) was reading up on the 15th-century religious visionary Margery Kempe (of King’s Lynn) whose life story is held to be the earliest known autobiography of a woman ever recorded.

Given Tutti’s extraordinary life, and her impact on art and music, it’s little wonder there is a film of her life in the works. Re-sisters is the story of three women consumed by their passion for life, a passion they expressed through music, art and lifestyle; they were undaunted by the consequences they faced in pursuit of enriching their lives, and fiercely challenged the societal and cultural norms of their time.

As much as Derbyshire and Tutti were able to express their sexualities (being around in the late 60s-70s cusp helped), Kempe took control of hers in a way that was exceptional for the time. It’s never easy to be part of the establishment when you’re driven by self-preservation to push against it.What starts as mail-art and performance pieces soon turns darker as Cosey begins to explore the world of adult magazines and the pornography industry. Each copy is hand printed by Cosey and professionally bound in a white hard back cover with a black embossed title and presented in a custom made slip case (69 p.

Re-Sisters by Cosey Fanni Tutti - Coles Books

From Nobel Laureates Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter to theatre greats Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett to rising stars Polly Stenham and Florian Zeller, Faber Drama presents the very best theatre has to offer. Meanwhile, after studying mathematics at Cambridge, Derbyshire applied for a job at Decca records, only to be told they didn’t employ women. Please Note: By their very nature, all signed books will have been handled several times before they get to you. In addition to some of her own life’s anecdotes, Tutti has enriched this tale with a third thread, the life of Margery Kempe (1373-1438), an English female mystic. In her new book, Re-Sisters, Cosey Fanni Tutti, musician and co-founder of industrial band Throbbing Gristle, draws parallels between herself and two other uncompromising female artists allergic to convention: the electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire, and the 15th-century mystic Margery Kempe, believed by many to be the first person to have authored an English-language autobiography. A lack of recognition, for electronic music generally and her own compositions, stymied her in her lifetime.
