Children are our future, and this book is about their future. As a scientist who has studied the climate from pole-to-pole, and as a parent with two young daughters, I believe there is no more important issue to inform and educate young people about."

A Ladybird Book: Climate Change - The Prince Of Wales, HRH

I assume there is no mention of any wildlife that benefits from climate change. There are lots of things that do better in a warmer climate. 2016 was “the hottest year eva!”. It was also the year with the highest crop production eva! But one never hears anything of this kind of good news in the MSM. There has been no more effective or committed champion of this cause than the former Prince of Wales and I am sure this book and his words will help to keep things moving in the right direction.” Other royal weddings were later accompanied by a similar book, including the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson in 1986.This included sitting together and going through the text quite literally word by word. The final product is infused with the voices of each of the authors. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ Ever since I was a young teenager I have been deeply worried about the way we have shaped our world.’‘I am pleased to see that children across the world […] are now raising the alarm and calling for big changes to happen," wrote the former Prince of Wales. "Their efforts have emphasised the importance of caring about what life will be like in the future – there is a lesson in this for us all." I recently interviewed Greenland residents, for whom adapting to climate changes is part of everyday life. We don’t really consider ourselves to be living climate-changed lives in Britain, but my childhood 30 years ago was enlivened by two winter blizzards that each shut down my village for a week. That snowmaggedon was great for community spirit.

King praises children for ‘raising the alarm over climate

HRH is clearly interested in climate change and flooding but he can’t or won’t connect this with upland management. Us and them again sadly, but he could rise above it all and set an example. I wonder if he has read “Inglorious”? A cookie set by YouTube to measure bandwidth that determines whether the user gets the new or old player interface. Ladybird books on ‘logic’, ‘honesty’ and ‘how to answer a question’ should be compulsory reading for MPs.” One popular meme of a two-dimensional snowman created by laying a carrot nose and two twig arms on to two puddles is the sum total of the snowmen my children have witnessed during their five years on this warming planet.

A Ladybird Book: Climate Change" includes an Afterword in which The Prince Charles, the former Prince of Wales sets out a personal message to readers. (The Afterword was written last year, when His Majesty The King was still The Prince of Wales.) The Ladybird Expert Book on Climate Change will be available from 26 January 2017, alongside volumes about quantum mechanics and evolution. It’s a while since I bought a Ladybird book – but I still have a lot of the original series dotted around the house.

So who were the target audience for the Ladybird book? Judging by the media coverage, the royalist/centre-right press took a significant interest. From the Telegraph to Mail on Sunday, there was sensible coverage, including an article in The Sun that discussed the book in the context of recent flooding events in the UK. There were a few obligatory snide comments about the prince’s penchant for expressing his political opinions, but broadly speaking the press coverage was positive. So the authors clearly got the tone – and the visual narrative – about right in this respect. Focusing on tangible consequences of climate impacts (such as health risks from extreme weather), or concrete benefits of climate policies (health gains from preventative measures to keep climate risks at bay) is likely to generate more engagement from people who don’t live and breathe climate change in the way that scientists or campaigners do.The efforts of Climate Outreach and Climate Outreach Europe are entirely focused on the public benefit and trustees don’t receive any remuneration. For a scientist awarded an OBE in 2016 for services to science and the public communication of science, co-authoring a lay guide to climate change – and for such an iconic book brand – was too good an opportunity to miss. Dr Tony Juniper said it is vital that the world takes action now to avoid the worst consequences of global heating, and part of any plan must include empowering young people. It was important to us too that along with detailing the risks, the book highlighted the opportunities for innovative low-carbon and climate-resilient growth that could improve the quality of people’s lives around the world in many different ways. Libby Walden, Commissioning Editor for Ladybird said the Ladybird title has a long history of making non-fiction accessible for children.

This is not about passing the problem to them, but helping to ensure they are armed with the facts and thus in a stronger position to urge that changes are made to protect their future," Juniper said. I wonder, would Prince Charles be able to put his name to such a book at some future time when he might be our king? Or would the subject be regarded as too political? This was a very worthwhile project and the first author’s celebrity status will get the messages to a wider audience than would otherwise be the case. I hope people find the book presents the evidence in an accessible way that enables readers to come to their own conclusions regarding the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as the scale and urgency of the challenge it poses. Filbert Cobb seems hard and cynical, not without justification, so so be it, but if Prince Charles would make a clear statement on the whole hunting issue and in support of radical reform, followed up by management practice on the Royal estates, it may be a mega U turn or it may be him “coming out” with what he really thinks, but it would certainly get some attention on the issue. He can be radical and revolutionary…so now would be good, far better than the blind and arrogant stubbornness of many in the shooting world. Probably better in the shooting and National press than a Ladybird book, but I may be wrong there! Nice little book with a big reach.
