These days, Lion House it is a separate entity and has been transformed into a grade two listed family home. The location was so convenient for shops, cafes, pubs being in the centre of town but still quiet.

The only reason I bought and started this book was I judged it on its beautiful cover. I'm glad I did. This is how history should be written, it read like a fictional narrative and was fun and not bogged down or densely dry. Williams, Florence. "A House, 10 Wives: Polygamy in Suburbia", The New York Times, 11 December 1997. Retrieved on 2 April 2021. Europeans feared Suleyman, as they feared rule by the “heathen” Muslims, and he was after all the leader of Islam. At one time or another, many European states entered into coalitions to hold him off. But for decades one man stood above all the others as Suleyman’s nemesis: the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Suleyman possessed a single ally in Europe: his trading partner, the city-state of Venice. But Venice was forever vulnerable to pressure from Charles and the French king and was, at best, an indifferent ally. From a distance of five hundred years, it seems as though the sultan was destined to fail. Under Suleyman’s leadership, the Ottoman Empire entered the golden age of its cultural development. He built schools, hospitals, libraries, baths, and soup kitchens for his subjects. And he protected the many Jews living in the empire, formally denouncing blood libels against them. He was, after all, the leader of Islam, and he turned for guidance to the scholarly doctors who studied the scriptures. But the decisions were his own. And Islamic society flourished as never before during his forty-five-year reign. Lion House is also just around the corner from the start of the Tissington Trail, a thirteen mile traffic free trail ideal for a relaxing walk or ride (bikes can be hired from the trail centre).Venice, 1522. Twenty-three men in robes of scarlet and blue assemble to hear the most sensitive intelligence from Istanbul: the Ottoman Sultan, the 'Grand Turk', has everything he needs to wage total war. By the end of the decade, a vast swathe of Europe will lie under Muslim rule. Lloyd, R. Scott. "“Little-Told History” of Beehive House and Lion House Comes to Life at Symposium", Church News. Retrieved on 2 April 2021.

Enjoy a bit of alfresco dining on the beautiful dining table outside the kitchen or perhaps a morning coffee and croissant from the nearby bakery on one of the elevated terraces. Very spacious and we had a very comfortable stay. There is a cloakroom in addition to the 3 bathrooms. There is a notebook to write any housekeeping points - which we completed for the cleaners for next guests- a few niggles.. Key sustainable design principles were employed, which involved maximising the opportunities for passive building design. The building fabric had to achieve a high energy efficiency rating as well as electrical systems and technologies to reduce energy loss during the building’s use. Finally the renewable capabilities of the scheme had to be explored with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality. The home has lots of character being a bank at one time and still retains some features. It has an Aga in the kitchen which is an excellent way to dry clothes. Comfortable bedroom, nice bathroom and fantastic roof garden. Three pubs within a few seconds walk.Mountain bikers will love cycling across the moorland and along forest trails, with a stunning technical trail beginning at North Bovey leading to Lustleigh Cleave. Considered detailing lends a qualitatively haptic feel to the finish, down to sapele timber flooring and handrails to the balconies Hayreddin Barbarossa (c. 1466/1483-1546), “King of Algiers,” red-bearded Muslim pirate turned Admiral of the Ottoman Navy De Bellaigue writes about Suleyman's life and times with wit and appreciation for the the forces at play, as well as insight into human nature. Lest you think that some of the more outrageous events in the book couldn't possibly have happened, there are notes and a bibliography, as well as an index. It's an important part of the European culture if you are born next to the Mediterranean and I learned a lot more about this time even if it's not the first book about these age I read.

Another issue that I have with this book is how de Bellaigue chose to write it. It's not written like a traditional historical biography where the author describes the events and then writes how they interpret the facts. It's written in the present tense like a novel. I had issues with this writing style. First as somebody who has studied history extensively it's hard to determine where the line between facts from primary and secondary sources and the author's interpretation lie. And second de Bellaigue's writing style is overwrought. The quaint streets of Moretonhampstead make a charming setting for your holiday to Devon, with lots of independent shops, restaurants and pubs to frequent, along with being just a stone's throw from beautiful countryside scenery.

Pass through the original strong room door and prison-like gate into the beautiful country kitchen where a gas fired AGA and plenty more excellent appliances can assist you in rustling up some fabulous meals to be enjoyed around the dining table. Lion House was formerly part of Brattleby Hall, which was the living quarters for the decorated wing commander who was also the first commanding officer of the famous 617 squadron. Upstairs the building boasts three nicely sized bedrooms and a master suite complete with dressing area and ensuite. It's the story of an age full of fascinating and strong characters, an age of importante changes like the Reform and Renaissance, an age where two different culture clashes and live side by side at the same time. Viorst, Milton. "Salt Lake City: The Founder Is Palpably Present", The New York Times, 26 September 1976. Retrieved on 2 April 2021.

The house was spotless and really comfy. Right in the middle of town so walking distance from everything and easy to drive to the walking routes! Moretonhampstead is a charming place, a real community, and we had some lovely walks. Michael was very helpful (especially when we temporarily lost the key!). We were grateful for the parking permit. We have only a couple of details to comment on. The fridge was missing its door shelves, which meant, for example, that one had to put milk in the vegetable drawer; we were rather short of space. The arrangement in the single bedroom, with no bedside table or light anywhere near, was inconvenient. A major move has been to bring the two external stairs that previously led up to a mezzanine lobby inside. These formed an awkward entrance which contributed to the tower’s original failure as commercial office space. The stairs now sit in a new much more accessible ground-level lobby, each nicely reusing its original cast-concrete treads. The move frees up space for both the forthcoming MICA-designed public plaza to the east and in anticipation of the thousands of Crossrail passengers emerging from Tottenham Court Road Station’s new exit to the west. However, moving the two sets of stairs internally makes for a slightly crammed entrance area. One set indeed is essentially excess to requirements, so has been treated more as a sculpture; a frame to a neon artwork by artist Cerith Wyn Evans which, riffing off Duchamp, is called Neon Descending a Staircase. Building on the success of The Lion House, his history of the rise of Suleyman the Magnificent, Christopher is currently writing the second part of a projected trilogy on the great Ottoman Sultan, while in April 2023 Columbia Global Reports will publish Flying Green, his book about the decarbonisation of aviation, a subject that combines his interest in climate science, technology and ethics. Uniting these varied threads is his role as a conciliator: between the past and the present, between adversaries, cultures and ideas.
