Description

We believe that the Law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of His moral government; that it is holy, just, and good; and that the inability which the Scriptures ascribe to fallen men to fulfill its precepts, arises entirely from their love of sin: to deliver them from which, and to restore them through a Mediator to unfeigned obedience to the holy Law, is one great end of the Gospel, and of the Means of Grace connected with the establishment of the visible church. Since then I’ve been on the hunt for a curriculum that is not only grounded in a biblical worldview but enjoyable for all my children to use. I can’t even tell you how excited I was to discover The Mystery of History curriculum. It’s chronological, Christian and a whole lot of fun.

Linda Lacour Hobar, author of The Mystery of History, is a passionate follower of Jesus Christ, a genuine “people-person”, and a fan of comfortable high-heels. Through homeschooling her children, and service as a missionary, she discovered a deep love for world history where the famous and the infamous have left their mark in time. In the year 2000, Linda sensed a clear call to write The Mystery of History for her children, grandchildren, and generations to come that they might know “the mystery of God . . . in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Col 2:3) Some of the games & more include paper dolls to correspond to the historical time period and multiple versions of Go Fish (Ancient, Medieval, Constitution, American History).

Usborne Books – You can’t beat Usborne for detailed, fantastic illustrations in their history books for children. Though they do not hold to a biblical worldview, I use them because I’m teaching plenty of biblical worldview the rest of the day! I like their history encyclopedias and history readers. Hunt down all the old ones you can find; they have some great current titles, but not nearly as many as they used to. (See my post about my favorites here.) We believe that a visible church of Christ is a congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by His laws; and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His word; that its only scriptural officers are Elders or Pastors, and Deacons, whose qualifications, claims, and duties are defined in the Epistles to Timothy and Titus.

The Mystery of History Volume 2 focuses on the Early Church and the Middle Ages, or the years 30 – 1456 AD. And the MOH curriculum makes it very easy to do this because at the end of each lesson, the optional assignments or activities are divided out by level. So, you can clearly see which activities your younger children will do and what your older children can be responsible to accomplish. If you like to save money and put things together yourself, or are on a tight budget, you may be searching for some free printables to go along with your history spine. If that is you, you have come to the right place.

Mystery of History Volume 1 (audio CDs)

We believe that Sanctification is the process by which, according to the will of God, we are made partakers of his holiness; that it is a progressive work; that it is begun in regeneration; and that it is carried on in the hearts of believers by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the Sealer and Comforter, in the continual use of the appointed means, – especially, the word of God, self-examination, self-denial, watchfulness and prayer. In addition, the author states that she is writing from a Protestant Christian worldview, however, she does handle the Catholic versus Protestant issues during the Reformation with much grace, even including heroes of both the Catholic and Protestant traditions. Is MOH classical? However, if King Arthur did really exist, the reality was likely less magical. The earliest surviving accounts date to the ninth century and tell of a leader (perhaps not even a king) who fought several battles against the Saxons; even the accuracy of these accounts is debatable. Hobar’s selection and presentation of topics are fascinating.Given the huge time period she covers in Volume II, she does a great job of pulling out key people and events so students get the big picture. For example, topics for the second and third weeks of the course are Nero, Martyrs of the Early Church, Josephus, Masada, The Dead Sea Scrolls, and The Buried City of Pompeii. While the primary emphasis is on the development of western civilization, there are quite a few lessons on Japan, China, Iceland, New Zealand (focusing on the Maori), Africa (focused on the city Great Zimbabwe), the Aztecs, and the Inkas. Every single new technology that has been made available to archeologists, beginning with carbon-14 dating in the 1950s, has radically pushed the field,” Berlin says. “We can see deeper and smaller and finer, and so there are many more questions we can ask and answer.”
