It’s a different kind of game, but if you’re going to enjoy the humour of Exploding Kittens, you’ll harness the same for A Game of Cat and Mouth. Some games are brilliant because they make you feel clever. Others take you on a narrative journey. Some games are good fun for all ages. And some games let you fire tiny balls with magnetic catapults to win points. It didn't have to be so clever or pretty and I still would have loved it. But the Exploding Kittens team have done a great job of making this feel like a premium product while also not breaking the bank. This is an absolute bargain even at RRP.
Sometimes, it doesn’t feel like dexterity games get their due. It’s easy to take a look at a bumper board game box, and think that these are the great games. The ones you get your teeth into. The ones your shelves groan at the weight from. If you compare that to a physically light, dexterity game where you haven’t got to plan your move ten spaces in advance or read a rulebook longer than some novels, it rarely wins.If you go to a cat café, you want to see cats. One at minimum, the whole café worth of cats being the actual goal. How are you going to achieve this? Well, you’re going to need cat toys, lots of them, well placed, to lure them to your side. That’s how Cat Cafétells us to approach the issue that is, with this roll and write. This is the snoozing cat of cat games, something just delightful in itself, but a slight chance of claws depending on how competitive you are. Cat and Mouth certainly combines elements from a few different sources, but adds wrinkles that edge it above the usual dexterity game. TL:DR this is excellent. It starts from the moment you open the box. The quality of components is brilliant. The box is also the play arena, and held together in box form by a sturdy magnetic flap and handle combo. The cat mouth is a impressive plastic piece with the scoring dials acting as the cat's eyes. Brilliantly these dials are connected so only one of you needs to update it when you score. The arena itself looks like a weird tennis court with one of you sat at each end. A game where balls are being flung and flying through the air seems like a recipe for pieces to be lost. This is managed quite well with the cardboard walls extending the height of the box and for the most part the balls to seem to only have enough power to stay within the playing area. When a ball does happen to bounce out, the player shouts outs “PAWS” and then retrieves the ball before play can continue after a countdown of 3. There are some spare balls in the box and we haven’t needed to use any. A must play game should be one to recommend again and again and again, and the simple entertainment this gives warrants the recommendation. It’s a single-hand game of vocabulation, where you have to list words starting with each consecutive letter, without repeating any words, becoming increasingly more difficult with each round. As your friends take turns, everyone needs to keep their eyes and ears open for funny, clever and even ridiculous combinations that may arise from random letter combinations! With Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, you are sure to enjoy a lot of laughter and lighthearted competition as you try to outdo each other and make the most obscure connections. This was the feature that I did wonder about as I could imagine the paw slipping as you build up speed but it honestly didn’t, it’s a very well designed game. What better way to round off the year, than with an epic, high tension, highly competitive tournament amongst colleagues at Tabletop Gaming?

Additionally playing this type of fast paced cooperative activity teaches collaboration among peers – an invaluable skill needed later on life no matter what career path you choose! Helping me to review A game of Cat and Mouth were my 9 year old daughter and almost 7 year old son, and as much as I would like to say that I annihilated them with my fast-thinking and speed it was a pretty close match each time. It is one of those super fast games where you can start to panic a bit and lose your focus if you aren’t careful, so there was a lot of screaming and tactical name-calling in our house to distract oneanother. Playing against my competitive husband was hilarious as it went on for so long that the kids gave up cheering and wandered off. Certainly, it's been a tough year, so with one of our Must-Play rated games in hand, we challenged the team to a battle of Exploding Kitten's newest game, Cat and Mouth, a game we rated a Must-Play, and we videoed it for your enjoyment. Then it’s time to fight RoboDog. The game really draws for both a fun family game for everyone to enjoy, plus the delightful artwork.
