About this deal

The Lakes distillery has arguably the most stunning location of any in England. Sitting close to Bassenthwaite Lake in the famous Lake District, this is as close to Scotland as you get in terms of landscape. Adnams Distillery proudly entered the whisky market in 2014 with the release of Single Malt Whisky. All the barley used in production came from East Anglian. Its makers also added spirits that went through aging using American oak casks for more complexity. Being small batch releases means there will be variations in each bottling, but the distillery has a clear house style which underpins each release. Among its key characteristics is an initial fruitiness that conjures various sweet desserts, from banoffee pie to cherry tarts, and a shaving of chocolate orange. They also introduce peated malt into the mix – just enough to allow for a hint of smoke on the aroma and a drier, gently lingering aftertaste.

Apart from technical considerations there are also environmental differences that are likely to affect the whisky production – the warmer climate of England’s Southern counties will cause whisky to age in a different way to those in the colder regions of Scotland. It has a lovely aromatic sweetness of fruit, vanilla, and white sugar. But the palate has more depth with flavors of apples, berries, kiwis, cherries, and cinnamon spice. 2. Anno The village of Hunmanby, sitting near the coastal town of Filey, is home to Yorkshire’s first-ever single malt whisky distillery. Growing out of a nearby brewery, the distillery is operated using only barley grown on the co-founders’ farm. They have filled over 2,000 casks since production began in mid-2016. To make this whisky, the Bimber team sources malt whisky from Scotland (with a minimum age of 12 years) and blends it before finishing it in casks that previously contained its own much sought after single malt. Only one release to date, the eight-month-old Rebellion, but definitely one to watch for future bottlings. It is a light and smooth expression with aromatic notes of condensed milk and anise. The palate has balanced flavors of butterscotch, bitter dark chocolate, and vanilla custard. 10. The Lakes Distillery Filey Bay is a brand under the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery released in 2016 in a 700ml bottle containing 46% ABV. The company’s distillers sought the advice of the industry legend, Dr. Jim Swan, to help them craft Yorkshire’s first single malt. Another scenic location, this time on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park in the southwest. The Dartmoor distillery can be found in the converted Old Town Hall in the small Devon town of Bovey Tracey, making it a great place to visit.

Sheldon, Liberty (July 28, 2023). "The Cotswolds Distillery named the most popular whisky distillery in UK and Ireland". The Oxfordshire Live. There has already been some high profile praise for what English whisky is doing in the industry, in terms of approach and quality. English distilleries are certainly not here to cut corners, they are here to put England right in the centre of the world of whisky, which for so many years has been dominated by Scotland, Ireland, the US, and more recently, Japan. Bristol Distillery (founded in the 17th century) — produced grain whisky which was "sent to Scotland and Ireland to make a Blended Scotch and Irish whisky, for whisky purpose it is specially adapted, and stands in high favour". In 2015, Anno Distillery collaborated with Westerham Brewery to craft the first whisky in Kent County. Westerham Brewery is in charge of the fermentation, while the Anno Distillery in Marden is for the distillation process.

In the 1887 book The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom by Alfred Barnard, the following English distilleries were listed: [9] No, English whisky is not the same as Scotch. Both spirits followed almost the same regulations, but one major difference is that Scotch must only use oak casks during its aging process. Final Thoughts

Want to know what English whisky is all about, and why it’s causing such a stir in the whisky world? Then swot up with some knowledge below before discovering which whiskies are worthy of your attention. What is the difference between Scotch whisky and English whisky? Feilden, Eloise (September 12, 2023). "First UK standards on whisky production published". The Drinks Business. Some of those sweet, vinous characteristics have transferred to the whisky, and it would make a great choice as a whisky aperitif or after-dinner sipper if you want to provide something a little different for you guests. The sweetness has flavours of fresh, juicy fruits, including peaches, oranges and something a little more tropical tasting. Even the spicy notes have a sweetness to them, with ginger the most obvious among them, and it has a long finish, helped by a slightly oily, viscous feel in the mouth. The name suggests a well-balanced smokiness with an intense chocolate taste and sherried sweetness on the palate. 9. The English Whisky Co.
