Serving my angling ‘apprenticeship' as I was in this period, Leicester and England international Ivan, together with Leigh's Kevin Ashurst were the two stars of the English match circuit, setting the trend with methods we younger anglers tried hard to emulate. Ivan became my angling hero, as he did for many of my peers. I too was given the book for Christmas. I found the match reporting nostalgic for an era that few of todays young matchmen would comprehend. Comprehend that is, that a match of a 1000 entrants was not uncommon and could be won with as little as 5lb of silvers. a b Daegling, David (2004). Bigfoot Exposed: An Anthropologist Examines America's Enduring Legend. Walnut Creek, California, USA: Rowman Altamira. p.213. ISBN 9780759105393. OCLC 55982193 . Retrieved April 8, 2013.

When Ivan was fishing matches, crowds of many hundreds would inevitably gather behind him. Rarely did Ivan complain, although he knew that it cost him many match wins over the years. Ivan understood the bigger picture. He realised that promoting the sport was even more important than his own personal success. And if the truth be known, Ivan thrived on the banter and camaraderie of the crowd. He was supposedly a man of few secrets, but perhaps the zoomer was one ace he kept up his sleeve. It was, after all, almost a licence to print money when only he and the inner circle of the Likely Lads team had the right float in the right conditions on the weedy Welland.

A NEW book celebrating the amazing angler that was Ivan Marks has been published – a year after the fishing world mourned the Leicester match legend’s passing.

I believe that Ivan's unique influence on a whole generation of anglers has played a very significant role in keeping the angling club scene alive in the UK to this day. Ivan the angler It was very difficult to write about the great little man of angling. To do so comprehensively would have taken far too long. But I’m happy with what we’ve produced and I hope people buy it, enjoy it, and know they are supporting a good cause too.”

Charismatic Ivan went from strength to strength, winning the ‘People’ Championship in 1967 and 1968. Then came three Great Ouse Championships in 1970, 1972 and 1973, setting a record weight for the event. He won the 1970 Welland Championships plus the HAS Fisheries Championships in 1969 and 1971. Ivan also designed the Daiwa MLB hook, and I used these hooks on the Trent for many years, favouring them to the famous Mustad 90340 for roach. Innovative Ivan, used lots of sugar and other sweeteners in his groundbait for bream when at his peak. I also believe he was using floating maggot long before the others realised what an advantage it could give when trying to catch bream or roach on the drop.

Interestingly, Ivan was credited with speculating on the potential for anglers future earnings to become their main income, for televised matches becoming as popular as golf. His alleged views on continental groundbaits not being needed for ‘our’ waters does in the light of the ‘Ghost Writer’ make me wonder now just how much of this book was Ivan’s take on matchfishing, or someone elses take on Ivan’s take on fishing. It is with a great deal of sadness that I report the death of Ivan Marks. Ivan, 67, had been battling with liver problems and other serious illness for some time and it finally beat him over the weekend when he died in hospital. Ivan Marks wasn’t just the finest match angler of his generation, he was perhaps the greatest of all time; he was certainly a dominant celebrity in a sport where such characters are rare. He dominated the sport in the 1960s and 1970s, and was still successful in the 1980s, winning a succession of massive championships and many big open matches. His outstanding ability brought him a regular England place. His Leicester teammates shared in his success, winning many team events, including the last of the All-England Nationals, and a further National win in 1974. The Complete Angler’ is 1974 National Champion and former England International Percy Anderson’s unique take on Ivan, who became one of his closest friends during their match fishing heyday and remained so until his death. Now in Lancashire, size 12s hooks were for hanging slabs of beef on at the butchers, but this being Ivan, I wasn't going to question the judgement of my hero, so on it went, on went two worms and out into peg 29 went the lot.He films hunters with their kills and beavers gathering wood for their dams. He then shows footage of Bigfoot at another river and a second Bigfoot close by, mentioning a related strong musky odor. Bigfoot is shown eating grass and Marx mentions he must be a vegetarian. Smith, Steven C; Francillon, Vincent J (1994). Film Composers Guide (2nded.). Los Angeles, California, USA: Lone Eagle Publishing. ISBN 9780943728575. OCLC 30629076 . Retrieved April 8, 2013. If, like my brother and I, you had the privilege of watching Ivan perform in a National championships it was an experience that remains vividly in the mind. For Ivan was the greatest entertainer the angling world has ever known. He was a regular on TV, including appearances on ITV's 'World of Sport'. He did a six-week stint on the ITV children's programme 'Magpie' and he doubled his money on Hughie Green's quiz of that name. Team manager and captain Marx takes a job in Washington state to film a Cinnamon bear. While there, he films Bigfoot walking through a field. He mentions that his footage of Bigfoot has been questioned by science and used by others on lecture circuits to make money.

It is hard to say which of these two highly talented all-rounders had the edge, but their legacy certainly improved the next generation of match anglers that saw out the 20th century and beyond. As match fishing boomed, Ivan wrote a weekly match column in the Angling Times and Kevin wrote one for the rival magazine, Angler's Mail. This period can fairly be called the ‘golden era' when river championships and other big matches regularly drew 500 competitors, sometimes 1,000-plus. The advent of carbon Charismatic Ivan went from strength to strength, winning the ‘People' Championship in 1967 and 1968. Then came three Great Ouse Championships in 1970, 1972 and 1973, setting a record weight for the event. He won the 1970 Welland Championships plus the HAS Fisheries Championships in 1969 and 1971. So RIP Ivan. I didn’t know you personally, as a personal friend that is, but like thousands of others, I felt like I did. For the army of match anglers who grew up in the 1960s and 70s, Ivan was the man who changed match fishing and we remain forever in his debt. As his biographer, I have more than a passing interest, but he was my hero too when, as a teenager in the early 1970s, I eagerly devoured his weekly column in Angling Times. Greatest of the greats

Changing the face of match fishing

The Legend of Bigfoot was released to theaters in 1976. [1] Ivan Marx made two follow-up documentaries: In the Shadow of Bigfoot and Bigfoot: Alive and Well in '82. Home media [ edit ] Ivan Marks was a name I saw frequently and peers always spoke and wrote of him as a ‘legend’. I often felt that I missed out on something there and this is where his book steps in. I remember the headlines following yet another big match win, and a big match in those days could have been a thousand pegs – ‘Ivan Marks- Superstar’. Nobody argued with it, you didn’t have to be a match angler to know that he was a truly great angler that stood head and shoulders above the crowd. He had something special, but like all great anglers you couldn’t put your finger on exactly what it was.
