Description

In Halifax, West Yorkshire, Catherine Cawood is a divorced police sergeant with two children. She is still trying to recover from the suicide of her daughter, which happened eight years ago. Catherine is raising her grandson, Ryan, who was born due to her daughter being raped by Tommy Lee Royce. Just when it seems like Catherine is gaining control over her life, she discovers that Tommy, whom she holds responsible for her daughter's suicide, has been released from prison after serving time for other offences. Catherine becomes consumed by the idea of confronting him, unaware that Tommy is involved in a criminal organisation with the intention of kidnapping Anne Gallagher, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, for ransom.

Lord Erroll's murder was also dramatised in the feature film White Mischief, which was released seven months after the first transmission of The Happy Valley. Delves Broughton was brought to trial months after the death. The word ‘motive’ hung above his head in flaming italics — Hay having been one of his wife’s lovers — yet he was acquitted and returned home to England. A few days after his arrival, he too committed suicide, by injecting a lethal overdose of morphine in a bedroom at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. This, naturally, got scurrilous tongues wagging even more fervently. Finally, new evidence — a tape recording, made by the son of friends of Hay, Diana and Delves Broughton, and giving an account of how the murder was carried out — was provided to Nicholls while she was researching her book in 2007, and seemed to prove unequivocally that Delves Broughton was, indeed, the killer. The mystery might have been solved, but the intrigue still burns: James Fox’s book White Mischief, on which the aforementioned movie was based, has never been out of print since its publication in 1982. However, some reviewers have criticised the show for its graphic content, especially in episodes three and four of season one, while others have noted the ubiquitous typecasting of male characters as either weak or criminals. In October 2020, Wainwright confirmed that there would be a third series and that she was in the "early stages" of writing it. Filming for the third series began in January 2022. The last instalment of the BBC crime drama, created and written by Sally Wainwright, returned on New Year’s Day after an almost seven-year break. During the first episode of the new series, Sarah Lancashire’s character Sergeant Catherine Cawood discovered the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir.

Starting out as a staff writer at Total Film, moving up to Deputy Online Editor, Sam was responsible for Total Film’s YouTube channel, where he revolutionised the magazine’s approach to video junkets, creating influential formats that spread to other outlets.Happy Valley to premiere exclusively on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada".
