Notes

It's not impossible and I'm sure, or at least, I hope it can happen. I hope that idealised vision of romantic love where you adore each other til the very end is something that's obtainable, but I just don't believe it is. It's likely that you'll split up. People are annoying, their habits are annoying, spending too much time in another person's company can be annoying. People change, people get bored, people have irritating habits, people feel trapped and claustrophobic. a b Rogers, Jude (May 23, 2008). "Bon Iver, For Emma, Forever Ago". The Guardian. Archived from the original on September 16, 2015 . Retrieved August 22, 2015. Having the foundation would mean very little if Justin Vernon didn't have the ability and talent to execute the album he was trying to make. When you're making this kind of intimate music, I think there's quite a set formula and it's a relatively easy one to implement but to make something truly special, you need something more. Something that transcends the technical aspects and the production. It has to have the feeling, it has to feel sincere and heartfelt - and For Emma, Forever Ago is most definitely that. It's some of the most heartfelt and deeply personal music I've ever listened to. I think that's the most important thing when making this kind of album, though musically it's stunning. The soft warm wispy acoustic guitar is perfect, and it creates a wonderful atmosphere. The vocal harmonies are beautiful as well and there's a lot of subtlety as well, like sparse use of horns and electronic effects. It's not as one dimensional as you'd think, it has more sonic depth than I was expecting yet it simultaneously manages to stay incredibly stripped down and minimalistic. a b Deusner, Stephen M. This is the sound of icy cold glacial loneliness. It's the perfect album to listen to in winter, I find it weirdly comforting to listen to and if you've ever had your heart broken, you can relate to it. For Emma, Forever Ago is desolate, poignant, introspective, deep, beautiful, chilling, intimate, delicate and vulnerable. So full of woe and longing, it's an album that really hits you hard. Justin Vernon really does create his own little world that's so full of isolation and pain, yet it so easy to get lost in. a b "Portuguesecharts.com – Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago". Hung Medien. Retrieved November 25, 2015. Ever since acoustic introspection became one of the most praised qualities in music over a decade ago, I've been quietly pleased that I was never tempted to attempt to publish any of my musings. If nothing else, the age/time continuum and thinner hair has taught me that however acute private feelings may be, they do not make for great art unless they can be embedded in a wider context.Top 200 Albums".
