But Chance quickly learns that the old man was actually killed by wealthy hunters in a game organized by a ruthless businessman (Lance Henriksen, The Terminator, No Escape). He’s a man who clearly loves what he does and takes that “work” seriously, but at the same time has the utmost contempt for his clients willfully killing them if and when necessary. Hard Target was shot on 35mm film and has been gifted a new native 4K restoration pulled direct from the original camera negative. A mysterious man by the name of Fouchon (Lance Henriksen) runs an underground multi-million dollar organization of elitists who pay top dollar to hunt the most dangerous game - Man. I think that the 4K master that was prepared on behalf of Kino Lorber is very solid, plus there is a fine selection of exclusive new bonus features.

Almost thirty years on, and Hard Target remains a veritable action classic and one of the best movies of Jean-Claude Van Damme's career.Back in the day when action movies were made properly and were R-Rated, lots of action and violence constantly throughout, plenty fights and high kicks, shoot-outs, chases, explosions, guns and not forgetting a cool cast of villains played by Lance Henriksen (Aliens) and Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) Great story and well directed by John Woo who makes the movie very stylish with his own brand of slow-mo fights and camera shots and a cool soundtrack too. The corrected track is very loud, with sharp sound effects and active surround channels, but dynamic range is just okay and could be better. Kino Lorber have detailed their upcoming 4K Blu-ray release of action thriller Hard Target (1993), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lance Henriksen, Yancy Butler, Wilford Brimley, and Kasi Lemmons.

Density levels are good, Fluidity is much better as well, so if you view on a larger screen this will be a substantial improvement that you will have a very easy time appreciating. I would say that once again the most significant upgrades that are introduced by the 4K restoration can be seen during the daylight footage. Peak Van Damme and possibly even peak Hollywood Woo, Hard Target is a bona fide action classic, perfectly blending martial arts, action, style and scoring, chewy character performances and star turns and a fabulously chosen ensemble cast bolstered by tremendous hero and villain characters, all pitched against a cleverly simple premise which is used as a foundation for a blisteringly exciting succession of action setpieces. In addition to that, the Blu-ray disc in the case also contains new interviews with John Woo, Lance Henriksen, Yancy Butler, and the film’s stunt coordinator, as well as one trailer for Hard Target and several more trailers for unrelated Kino home video titles. Woo may not have made his best film here, but it was easily one of his best US outings, and he inarguably worked wonders with the ingredients he had, making Van Damme into an eminently cool action icon and certainly delivering his best flick, whilst crafting a bona fide action classic in the process. Bruce Jensen on Jake Gyllenhaal goes full on Jackie Chan in the Trailer for Doug Liman’s ‘Road House’ also starring Conor McGregor Dare I say, for my taste, this looks better than the original? After a string of back-to-back-to-back successes earning higher and higher box office revenue and more favorable critical responses, he was in his element (hair notwithstanding).

Kino Lorber have confirmed that they are preparing a 4K Blu-ray release of John Woo's action thriller Hard Target (1993), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lance Henriksen, Yancy Butler, Wilford Brimley, and Kasi Lemmons. For example, there are entire parts that feel unfinished, while elsewhere the action sequences look unnecessarily prolonged. Attractive and talented, she enjoyed parts in other action movies before headlining the underrated Witchblade series - but she’s never really had that huge star-making movie role. A direct comparison between the new and old Blu-ray releases easily reveals the superiority of the former as well. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Since 2001, we've brought you uncompromising, candid takes on the world of film, music, television, video games, theater, and more. By the time that John Woo came to America to make his first Hollywood movie, he was widely acknowledged as the finest action director of his time, having come off a string of Hong Kong classics ranging from A Better Tomorrow to Hard Boiled. Additionally, I think that in 1080p some of the black crush becomes more prominent, though I wish to mention that the stylization again hides a lot of it pretty well. To be entirely honest, I expected to see the same type of consistent improvements in these darker areas as well.

He’s doing impressive stunts, he’s quipping, he’s leaning into the action star leading man role with ease. Also fans of Van Damme all no doubt agree that this is one of the muscles from Brussels best films, not only for the awesome action pieces but also the high production values on display. Finally, there are no distracting large blemishes, cuts, marks or dark spots, but I did notice a couple of white specks. The steelbook is beautifully glossed and embossed, aswell as like many other recent releases you get production cards, poster and a nice little production booklet with some very nice never before seen stills. Possibly depending on setup and inclination, the audio snafu is infinitely more tolerable than the strobe effect of the DV layer, however the flip side to this is that there is a fix to the DV issue - at least for some - in that if you are able to watch it with the base HDR layer only (i. track from the old Blu-ray release, and unless I am missing something, the new DTS-HD Master Audio 5. Running over schedule and losing an epic boat chase at the bequest of his lead actor (who preferred horses; the boat sequence would be saved for Woo's later Face/Off) the director turned in a first cut which was too long and violent for the studios - earning a dreaded NC-17 by the censors, back in the days when they refused to specify what exactly needed to be changed to secure a more studio-friendly R-rating.
