On the other hand, given the sheer number of positive reviews out there, I do think that it’s important to address some of the problematic aspects of the story. It'd be really cool to be able to do this without shame, without hopping on a train to ride halfway across the city first. A thoroughly enjoyable, emotionally rich, action-packed story with the most exciting new superheroes in decades. So Danny Tozer is a transgender girl who is hiding her identity from her family (and everyone else), barely surviving by expressing herself by painting her toenails in secret. She skates by with the only form of feminine self-expression she can sneak in: busing to the opposite end of the city and secretly painting her toes behind the mall.

hoping for another year of feeling more like myself, more reading, more writing, more art, more craft, more travel, more wholeness. I’ve been reading the second Toronto Connections book, Finding Your Feet, which features an asexual heroine and a transgender hero. She doesn’t have any hobbies: she saves people because she’s able to do so but doesn’t have any particular characteristics.

I don’t want to suggest that people banish the book off their shelves or protest libraries to get rid of it. Between her father’s dangerous obsession with “curing” her girlhood and her fellow superheroes arguing over her place in their ranks, Danny feels like she’s in over her head.

He fell off continually; every time, despite his prayers and tears, he was lifted up and set upon its back again. I came into Dreadnought fresh off the Extraordinaries, a much better queer YA novel–and I made it six pages before Danny’s mental voice wore me out. They stop robberies and practice flying and have a grand time until they decide to take on Utopia, the supervillian who killed Dreadnought at the beginning of the story.Pure genius … I’m not exaggerating the potential of Priest’s Clockwork Century’ Paul Goat Allen, ‘Exceptional .

Between her fathers dangerous obsession with curing her girlhood, her best friend suddenly acting like hes entitled to date her, and her fellow superheroes arguing over her place in their ranks, Danny feels like shes in over her head. Besides a general enjoyment of her personality, there were always guaranteed good times when she and Danielle shared a scene, either of the entertaining or emotional variety. While working in a Confederate hospital, she receives word that her estranged father is dying and wants to see her. I cannot wait to see how she develops moving forward into the next book in the series, and how the world around her shifts as well.

Even for teens, growing up in the age of superhero movies means that this book probably isn’t offering anything new in terms of story other than Danny. This story isn't silly, but it does embrace some of the ridiculousness that comes inherently with people who have super powers and wear costumes to fight crime.

Daniels has captured the alternating bursts of confidence and vulnerability often present in 15-year-olds with mentally abusive fathers and unsupportive mothers; she threads it through a superhero story with a beautifully paced plot that has no problematic snags to interrupt the flow. We'll hide under the road until the emergency crews arrive, and then I'll find some paramedics and bring them back here. The development of the British Navy is also covered in substantial detail, with Jackie Fisher presented fully.
