I had, for example, joked about the bad behaviour of the fictional character, Marco, in the chapter on risk – the attempt to get a laugh didn’t do service to the serious topic so I toned it down. The book covers six key areas; Emotions, Sleep, Risk-taking, Gender differences, Mental health issues and Brain development in older teens. It's a book written for young people, and as such it doesn't contain strategies for parents to deal with some of the more difficult aspects of adolescence. of any different behaviours could be put down to nurture (society) more than nature (biology) but that there are some differences that we observe that are more likely to be down to biology – and that those differences are not, in my view, very interesting or meaningful.

The information was presented in a really nice easy to read way and I think the stories that are presented also help to make it a more interesting read and help to put it into real life perspective rather than just facts on a page. My new 'how to cope' guide will not be in use for a few years yet but I will hold it close when the time comes. Even if centuries/millennia of human females more often having caring or gathering roles and males more often having combative or hunting roles might have created patterns of typical skill-sets, this does not mean that each can’t very easily learn the other set of skills. Reading about what goes on in an adolescent's brain can make all the difference to a teacher or parent who deals with the fallout of it each day.The fact that the book is written for both parent and teenager invites some minor problems with regard to the nature of its content, but all in all, it is a creative part of a solution to an age-old problem: understanding the enigmatic teenager. Case studies are particularly useful which makes a teenager think they are not alone in their “ weirdness “. There's also sound advice about addiction, self-harm, depression and other mental illnesses, and some pointers towards recognising when you may need to seek help. It is very rare that an author succeeds in writing a book for teenagers which is also a 'must read for their parents and teachers. A young survivor tells her searing, visceral story of sexual assault, justice, and healing in this gutwrenching memoir.

If you work long enough surrounded by 600 teenagers, your brain adapts to their way of (non)thinking. Aimed directly at teenagers, it is pitched just right - with the correct balance between facts, theory, and guidance. This means that while most children between four and 10 and most adults between 19 and 90 can distinguish fear on an adult face, lots of teenagers can’t.

If a refund is payable to you we will process the refund as soon as possible, and, in any case within fourteen (14) days. More unusually though this book is very much pitched at teenagers themselves and in that regard it is a 4 star read. While the generalisations are fascinating, and the basic biology explained well, it is not written by a scientist and a lot of the assessments are very simplistic. This book was recommended to me on separate occasions by a couple of experts on mental health so I decided to read it.This non-fictional science book talks about our brain during puberty and how it perceives things differently.
