Living at the house with Merritt, Hulda (as the "housekeeper"), and "house" (to be explained in the story), are Baptiste, the chef, and Beth (an additional employee from BIKES), two other characters that I couldn't help loving. At first I started to get bogged down with the talk of magic spells and related genealogy but as I became more invested in the characters, I seemed to understand those things better. Amanda Leigh Cobb brings in Hulda, an employee from the Boston Institute of Keepers of Enchanted Rooms, who seems to be a stern young woman, at first.It is engaging, well thought out with more depth than I expected and yet an easy listen with humour and at times poignancy.

We don't get too much back story to the characters until the latter part of the novel and so end up with strangers watching them react to things. And the sentient walls aren't their only concern-something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within. The story of a haunted home, the guy who unintentionally inherits it, and the lady who helps tame it is told in this gorgeous, entertaining tale. The main timeline is 1846 and thirty one year old author, Merritt Fernsby, has just inherited a house on his very own little island. A trio of narrators makes this lighthearted historical fantasy with touches of mystery and romance a delight.

Not so scary that older kids couldn't handle it (and to be honest, they would probably handle it better than I did. This is Charlie at her best—intriguing mystery, creative magic systems, with plenty of romance to keep me turning the pages.

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms takes place in the mid-1800s, mainly in Rhode Island, but there are scenes set in England. As the author explores two completely dissimilar people in two utterly dissimilar places, the writing may initially seem a little muddled and disconnected. Holmberg is an award-winning, best-selling, and internationally published author of fantasy and romantic fiction.The beginning may remind you of Beauty and the Beast (Disney), or, with a more literary nod The House with Chicken Legs (Anderson). This is only until he realises that his new house has locked him in and has no intention of ever letting him out. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated.
