Amazingly, Maier almost never took multiple shots of the same subject (apart from the children in her care, and a series of pensive self-portraits, sometimes just of her own shadow): One carefully considered image was enough for her. And the results are stunning. The year 1968 was particularly pivotal for America, and indeed for Maier; there's a whole chapter devoted to her chronicles of that tumultuous time, with special attention paid to the life and death of Robert F. Kennedy. While I loved all of the images in the book, my favorites are the portraits in the chapter "Downtown" (pp. 206-241). Here are young people and old people; the rich, the poor, and the once-rich; characters all. These are only single portraits, but I feel as if I can see into these people's souls; the good and the sad are revealed in equal measure. He also tells her there's a comm droid waiting for her outside. The droid, however, is glitching, and Imri asks to be excused because the number of people around is stressing his powerful empathic abilities. As Vernestra waits by herself, she encounters Padawan Reath Silas, who has recently arrived on the space station with his Master, Cohmac Vitus. Reath helps fix the droid, telling her he'll see her later. Vernestra finds herself on a call with her old Master, Stellan Gios, who says he wants her to report to Coruscant, as a Galactic Republic senator wants her help dealing with a situation in the Berenge sector. Street photographers of the time used 35mm cameras with three dozen frames on a roll. Vivian Maier used a larger format camera with a dozen frames on a roll. Her larger negatives paid off. In a book of this type, the higher resolution gives us big, clear images. Likewise, Ireland explores a relatable journey of self-discovery with Vernestra, one of the youngest Jedi Knights and with a padawan at just 17 years old. Her astounding achievements established high expectations for her role as a teacher and beyond, but none as high as the expectations she puts on herself. The most intriguing and loveable Jedi in all of Star Wars are the ones with self-doubt and conflicting emotions, and we see a lot of Vernestra dealing with these feelings throughout the book.

Meanwhile, Syl awakes in a cell with the unconscious Imri and Reath. Following a struggle with her Nihil guard Nan, Syl has a tense reunion with her mother Chancey. Syl is angry that her mother staged her own death and is collaborating with the Nihil. Chancey explains that she joined the Nihil after they offered to help her construct a prototype gravity well projector with the help of the Oracle. Chancey explains that the captive Padawans are tribute for the "Eye" Marchion Ro, the leader of the Nihil who is challenging the Republic. Syl is upset that her mother could consider sacrificing individuals as test subjects for the Nihil.

Imri points Vernestra to the medical pod containing the ancient Mari San Tekka, whom both Vern and Jordanna recognize. They also find the incapacitated Chadra-Fan Nihil nearby.I was inspired to borrow this book from the Library after viewing the inspiring Vivian Maier: In Color Exhibition at the Chicago History Museum. She was not afraid to visit, regularly, the toughest, most run-down areas of Chicago, her young charges in tow, to photograph anyone she felt worthy of capturing. The humanity and dignity of her subjects, even those skid-row denizens whom most people might cross the street to avoid, come across vividly in her portraits. Some of these photos seem somewhat posed or at least contemplated, while others were obviously taken on the sly. Following the events at Gravity's Heart, Vernestra attends a debriefing with the Jedi Council. Master Teri Rosason asks if her young age led Xylan Graf to believe that he could manipulate as a bargaining chip in his dealings with the Nihil. Vern responds that Xylan is solely responsible for his actions and says that she is only aware that Xylan had convinced the Republic to fund a scientific mission to the Bergen sector. She explains that Master Cohmac's caution had led to the deployment of Coalition forces from the Hetzal system to aid them. That said, I do think there are some very strong images in this collection. There are also some biographical details that were not in the film. I feel like some of the still life shots are much less interesting than the street portraits; but there are some really stunning street portraits in this book.
