Description

He is recipient of the ONR Young Investigator Award and the IEEE Computer Science and Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award. this book is suitable as a text for an undergraduate algorithms class, but also as an invaluable reference for the practicing programmer. The tutorial material in the first half of the book covers the essentials: data structures such as lists, arrays, stacks, queues, binary trees, etc. A lot of people might enjoy this, but I feel that having the mathematical understanding of algorithms and the proofs to back it up will greatly increase your understanding of the material.

Every programmer should read this book, and anyone working in the field should keep it close to hand. It will not only serve as a valuable undergraduate textbook, but it will also become an irreplaceable reference guide for most professionals in the area. I found the "Hitchhiker's Guide to Algorithms" in the back to be extremely useful if you really find yourself tackling an algorithmic problem in practice. over 30 hours of audio lectures on the design and analysis of algorithms are provided, all keyed to on-line lecture notes.and so one should probably have a more rigorous book at hand to fill in some details when necessary. For a decade, Steven Skiena's Algorithm Design Manual retained its title as the best and most comprehensive practical algorithm guide to help identify and solve problems. The book builds a way of thinking towards solving algorithms problems, instead of just stating the algorithms and data structures in a mechanical way, but in many parts it is not very clear and you have to read a passage multiple times to understand what the author meant.

One of Skiena's "war stories" tells of making a program run 30,000 times faster by using a better-designed algorithm. The text is very accessible to read and the pictures help to visualise and understand what's going on. Unlike other algorithm books that I have the algorithms are written independent of any programming language. It has all the right ingredients: rich contents, friendly, personal language, subtle humor, the right references, and a plethora of pointers to resources. The first part, Techniques, provides accessible instruction on methods for designing and analyzing computer algorithms. The first part, Techniques, provides accessible instruction on methods for designing and analyzing computer algorithms. Expanding on the highly successful formula of the first edition, this book now serves as the primary textbook of choice for any algorithm design course while maintaining its status as the premier practical reference guide to algorithms.

THE ALGORITHM DESIGN MANUAL comes with a CD-ROM that contains: * a complete hypertext version of the full printed book.It is more exciting - when it is done properly - because now the computer can solve every variation of a problem, not just one version of it. He is the author of four books, including "The Algorithm Design Manual" and "Calculated Bets: Computers, Gambling, and Mathematical Modeling to Win". A unique and illuminating feature of this book is an extensive collection of "war stories" describing the author's personal experiences with applying these algorithmic tools in various circumstances (quite fascinating, and some a bit darkly humorous). If you were a professional programmer trying to earn a living, you would want to do even better: programme the computer to find the best way of finding a route (fastest, smallest, most accurate, suitable for wide loads, avoiding speed cameras . For those who are new to the book, its main aim remains to provide a comprehensive catalogue of algorithms and background resources.

The book spends a lot of time emphasizing the utility of graph algorithms and how to model various classes of problems with them, as well as lot of time on dynamic programming and backtracking/enumeration. This book is a practical, example-driven book on computer science algorithms, which is very readable and has a wealth of ready-to-use examples. Professor Skiena is also author of the popular Springer text, Programming Challenges: The Programming Contest Training Manual. Every programmer should read this book, and anyone working in the field should keep it close to hand - The Algorithm Design Manual is not just for use on university courses.

This is very useful for gaining a broad overview of what tools are available, though the coverage can be somewhat brief (e. probably a better book to carry around in one's professional life than CLR, though it lacks some of the theoretical intensity of the Big White Book.
