I own but haven't yet read his previous memoir, Hanner Amser, I chose to get the original Welsh edition and I have too many books ahead of it on my list right now. His autobiography sees Owens take readers behind the scenes as he talks about what it was really like to be in the middle during some of rugby's greatest matches, reveals details of conversations with players out on the pitch, meetings with coaches and gives a string of hilarious dressing room anecdotes.

Fair to say it is a particularly eagerly awaited piece of work as Owens' story is simply like no other. Of 'This Is Not Soccer', he tells Wales Online in an interview about the book: "I remember coming back into the dressing room to be told by my TMO, 'What you said was hilarious Nige, everyone is loving it'. This wasn’t the first time the police had been involved in a game officiated by Owens, although the other occasion was far from funny. He is the author of Barry John: The George Best of Rugby (Mainstream Publishing, 2000) and Gary Speed Remembered (Andre Deutsch Ltd, 2012).I hope people enjoy the book, smile, like the behind-the-scenes stories I tell, but if it also helps some who might be going through trauma and want some light at the end of the tunnel, that's even more important. One of the policemen was a bit overweight, his helmet slipping, he was having to put his hand up to make sure it stayed on his head whilst running as hard as he could.

There are plenty of great little stories peppered throughout this book, from dropping his steak in front of the Queen to the rituals he follows when preparing for big games, such as donning Superman boxer shorts to listening to inspiring playlists including the stirring hymn ‘How Great Thou Art. Add to that the hundreds of thousands of air miles, the need to be in physical nick at least as good as the players on the pitch and one gets a picture of the rigours of refereeing. It’s a rare thing to to able to be able to assert authority with a smile, and of course his humour, both on and off the pitch has become a hallmark of his refereeing style and of the man himself. With his contract with the Welsh Rugby Union having come to an end in 2020, he is free to reveal all about his career since his previous autobiography, Half Time, to speak his mind on various issues and to give the full story of his last Rugby World Cup in 2019. This book gives a good insight into the world of professional rugby refereing and how those systems work - something I hadn't thought much about before.

He rubbed shoulders with royalty, invited to a Buckingham Palace lunch with The Queen and Prince Philip, where they spoke to him about rugby. Nigel Owens: The Final Whistle" stands as the rugby book of the year, offering a gripping and inspirational account of an extraordinary individual.Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. That moment made sure he "refereed every game afterwards as if it was a World Cup final," whatever the level. This person from a council estate in the west Wales village of Mynyddcerrig had just had these conversations with the Queen and the Duke. As does his love for his parents, and for the west Wales community where he grew up and so much more.
