Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. Constant questions about when she was going to start dating and feelings of being broken because she didn’t feel the burning need to date anyone reminded me of how I felt in high school. I related to Yuriko immediately, especially when the story gave a glimpse of her life in high school. And I feel even a chapter would have helped at this stage; hitting the ground running makes for a dramatic opening but it’s telling the story the wrong way round.

But my new name is a name untainted by that: rather than being foundationally steeped in that pain, it’s a name with the potential to be filled with healing from that trauma. The artstyle is nice, and the characters are great so far (although I have only found 3 chapters translated.

ANNtv, ANNCast, Answerman, Astro Toy, Intern Annika, Brain Diving, Buried Treasure, Chicks On Anime, Crashing Japan, The Dub Track, The Edit List, Epic Threads, From The Gallery, Hai Fidelity, House of 1000 Manga, Ima Kore Ga Hoshiin Da, Old School, Pile of Shame, RIGHT TURN ONLY! Gakurouta, described in one instance by Yuriko to herself as ‘a secretive person’ is more, I’d say, self-reliant, having led a rather secluded life; he’s still not used to sharing with another person. This one also throws in a little of the ‘friend you had in high school who you were just like and then you both went in different directions’ that many of us have lived through.

Even when I did get together with my girlfriend/future wife and put the “bisexual” pieces together for myself, there were always questions asking when we’d have children, how we’d even go about doing it since we were two women (eye roll), and, ugh, “who’s the man in the relationship? I don’t want this to sound prurient but surely, it’s a genuine issue as he’s not the one saying he’s asexual. This take on marriage is one that respects marriage, but more importantly, it takes time to explore what happens when society pushes you into one.No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Following through on this, the mangaka includes more than one ‘amusing’ scene in which Gakurouta shows a real interest in BL manga or a BL novel and each time, Yuriko snatches it away from him – and shock, horror! I wrote, in June, in that Okazu article, primarily about my body and its relationship to Yuri, to how that had initially informed femininity and then, informed trans masculinity.

If could use a lot less of the lame comedy, and I don’t know exactly where this story will go now that all the flashbacks are done, but it’s not bad at all. Yuriko and Gakurouta know the sides of each other that won't allow them to fit in with regular society, but otherwise they know very little about each other. Changing my name in our legal system hasn’t gotten rid of that: my body is a tapestry of thirty years of forcing myself to never question my lifelong detachment from femininity, to try to be a better daughter when I wanted to be something closer to a son while never being male, to try to hide my struggles with seeing too much, experiencing too much, being forced to be too much.In so many ways, I Want To Be a Wall relies on a shared cultural narrative of fitting in: it’s half of the appeal of the debut volume. The incredible bonds that can form between humans goes beyond romance and this story showcases that well. That’s the meat of the story, which has precious little to do with the marriage side of things, really, although once the jokes are out of the way, there’s some warmth to be found in the story of these two friends in a marriage of convenience learning to come together and be a little closer, even if not do much in the romantic sense. The Beard: Gakurouta and Yuriko are mutual beards to one another, as Gakurouta isn't attracted to women while Yuriko isn't attracted to anyone. For the past two–almost three–years, the AniFam and internet at large has known me professionally as Mercedez Clewis.
