The United Kingdom half of this map collection introduces the concept of technology. At the start of the game, players can build only one- and two-train routes and only in England. By spending wild cards, players gain the ability to build routes three trains long or longer, in addition to being able to build ferries across water and build train routes in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Players can also buy bonus cards that allow them to score extra points for taking certain actions during play. Despite the name, the map covers both the UK and the Republic of Ireland, that is, the islands of Great Britain and Ireland.

Some players like to add up the points for the routes they claim at game end, rather than each time a route is claimed. There are 30 destination cards in the game. Shuffle these and deal three to each player. All cards should be kept secret so other players don’t know where you’re heading. At the beginning of their turn, before taking their regular action, a player may discard locomotive cards to buy one technology card. The cost is indicated by a symbol on the cards. Allows you to claim 4, 5, and 6 space routes. The Mechanical Stoker is still needed to claim 3 space routes. These replace the bonus points given for the longest routes. At final scoring, each player receives points depending upon 2 factors: the number of players and the number of merchandise cards. The player with the most gets the most points and each subsequent player gets less.

Again, the artwork on the cards is of a good standard. But when playing this game you will have to use the train cards from the original game and not the ones in the box.You may play this card to claim a route that was already claimed by another player. When playing this card, you must still play the correct number of cards to claim the route. As a couple who had been together for almost eight years we loved spending time together, but also started to have our own hobbies and interests to keep us busy. We had collected the usual suspects of gaming. Namely games like Monopoly, Scrabble, Pass the Pigs, etc. We loved playing a good game now and again, but I could see that there was a different level of board games out there to be played.

On the UK side of the board, technology plays its part. You start out as a small train tycoon in England. At first, you can only build routes that are one- or two-trains in length. But if you spend the wild train cards, you then ‘upgrade’ your tech! Then you can build longer routes. Then you can start extending your network into Wales, Scotland and Ireland. There’s even bonus cards up for grabs, with other means to score points!This restriction of route length in the early game adds a new level of play and forces players to change up their tactics on the fly as new technologies are opened up and new opportunities become available. Which technologies will end up in your hand is fairly unpredictable so it certainly behooves the canny player to dive in straight away with those short routes and see where the game takes you.
