Description

Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. In all test runs, we rebooted the system, ensured all temp and prefetch data was purged, and waited several minutes for drive activity to settle and for the system to reach an idle state before invoking a test. All of the drives here have also been updated to their latest firmware as of press time. Where applicable, we would also typically use any proprietary NVMe drivers available from a given manufacturer, but all of the drives featured here used the Microsoft driver included with Windows 11. Overall, the SN770 represent good value and is undoubtedly a better option than purchasing an end-of-line Gen3 design.

billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. In short, this may be the cheapest Gen 4 branded drive by some margin. However, I need to point out that some of the competitor devices support hardware encryption and have greater sustained performance for those that write large volumes of data. Depending on how you intend to use an SSDs, endurance is either something you are concerned about or not. For those that hammer their drive relentlessly, the SN770 is an average performer in terms of how much writing it can handle.

Western Digital does it again – the SN770 represents a big leap forward for NVMe storage tech. Able to reliably and consistently hit the advertised read and write speeds across the entire file size spectrum, the only thing missing here is a heatsink. With 1TB hitting the sweet spot of price to performance, the SN770 is a must have for any bleeding-edge build.I did some tests in Game Mode, and it didn’t offer any dramatic improvement over the normal operations of the drives in the benchmarks I use. That’s to be expected as Game Mode, according to Western Digital, is meant to enhance performance with game workloads, and synthetic benchmarks don’t have the same workload. Unlike the SN750 SE we reviewed last year, we see highly consistent reads and writes, even as the buffer fills completely. So much so that I felt like there could have been an error, so I ran it three more times just to be sure, and all of the results looked exactly like this. Loading the drive up to 90%, the values didn’t change even slightly. This drive is remarkably consistent – something you will greatly appreciate in a storage medium, though it does hit closer to the 5GB mark – 500MB shy of maximum. You are responsible for the contents of your comments and any consequences that may arise as a result of them.

My advice is unchanged on this subject, in that if TBW (Total Bytes Written) is potentially an issue for you, then buy the largest capacity drives to better distribute the workload between NAND cells. In comparison, the SN770 is a dramatically better proposition, even for those still using Gen 3 slots than the SN750. It offers much better power efficiency, making it useful for laptop users.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria review in progress

Get into the game fast as you zoom past load times with blazing speeds of up to 5,150MB/s (1TB and 2TB models). Three versions of the drive are available, a 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB model, with some differences that might not be immediately apparent. All three models carry a 5 year warranty, which is fantastic, but the 500GB model comes in at 5000 MB/s read, and 4000MB/s write speeds. The 1TB hits at 5150 and 4900, respectively, and the 2TB model just slightly less than that at 5150 MB/s read and 4840 MB/s write. All relatively close, right? Looking a layer deeper, their IOPs are very different. So what’s an IOP? If the SN770 has a weakness, it is that once the local RAM buffer and SLC cache are saturated, performance tends to fall off a cliff when the true speed of the NAND is exposed. When Western Digital sent my review sample, it was specifically mentioned not to test it in a PS5, and while it might work in some way, this isn’t something I’d recommend you do. In short, we believe that this is the world's best way to test an SSDs gaming prowess and accurately compare it against competing SSDs.
